Try Something New – ORIENTEERING

Today was the first day that our Grade4 students tried Orienteering in Phys Ed.

What is orienteering? Here is the definition from

“a competitive sport, originating in Sweden, that tests the skills of map reading and cross-country running, in which competitors race through an unknown area to find various checkpoints by using only a compass and topographical map, the winner being the finisher with the lowest elapsed time”

In our beginner version, students are given a map of the school grounds marked with letters. They have to find the control markers outside with a partner, using their mapping skills from Social Studies. The idea is to be the fastest team to find them all… so that’s where the fitness of PE comes in!

  1. Orienteering was awsome Kirsten and I found at least 5 letters, it was the best! We were on a role.

  2. I had a great day orienteering. I can’t wait to do it again!! Me and Matthew found all of the cards. They where easy to find and the one that was the hardest for me to find was the one that was in the soccer field in the trees which is O! See you tomorrow Mrs.Walton.
